What is the Muslim World?

Almost 25% of the world’s population, or 1 in every 4 people alive today is a Muslim, and this number is growing!  There are significant numbers of Muslims in 57 countries of the world, from Indonesia to Nigeria, from China and Russia to North and South America.


Indonesia is the most populous Muslim country in the world with over 200 million.  Indonesia is located north of Australia, and consists of thousands of islands and hundreds of ethnic groups and languages

Indian Subcontinent

India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh contain almost 500,000 or almost 33% of all the Muslims in the world.  Both Pakistan and Bangladesh have strong Muslim majorities, while in India Muslims are the minority to the majority of Hindus.  The current Prime Minister of Bangladesh is a woman, and Pakistan had a woman Prime Minister, Benazir Bhutto.

Turkic Speaking Groups

Consisting of Turkey, the former Soviet republics of Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Kirghizstan, Tajikistan, Azerbaijan, and the Uighurs of Northwest China as well as the Tatars of Russia and the Ukraine, and others, the Turkic world contains about 100 million Muslims.

Persian Speaking Groups

Iran, Afghanistan, and Tajikistan, containing over 100 million Muslims, make up the Persian speaking contingent of the Muslim world.


The 55 nations represented by Africa contain over 430 million Muslims.  The North African nations of Egypt, Libya, Tunisia, Algeria, Morocco, and Sudan, along with Somalia, contain over half of these.

The Middle East

Only a little over 8% of the Muslims of the world live in the Middle Eastern countries of Saudi Arabia, Yemen, Oman, Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Qatar, Iraq, Syria, Jordan, Lebanon, the Palestinian territories, and Israel.
